The Church of St. Michael the Archangel

An entire church, standing whole, 18 metres down. There are few sunken churches in such good condition.

St. Archangel Michael first shows up as a monastery in Ottoman registers from 1560, though older graves and the remains of a lodging in the churchyard suggest something stood there a century earlier. What is down there now was built after the Second Serbian Uprising in the style of the old log churches — first written up by Joakim Vujić in 1826, last altered in 1930. Moving it was discussed and abandoned; in 2003 the bishop consented to the flooding on condition that a new church be raised above the waterline. The relics, the iconostasis and the 1860 bell were carried out. In 2016 the water took the rest.

The water is under 5 °C year round and visibility is mostly poor. Finding the church can be hard sometimes, so plan to have at least two dives if you don't find it at first.

Entering the church should be done only by very experienced divers and only on CCR, as the ceiling is in poor condition and could collapse if disturbed by a mass of bubbles.
